Discovering the change
27 September 2018
The event is an occasion to discover or learn about particular experiences, organisations, women and men who are marking a turning point in the way development is approached in Calabria. They are guided by a clear vision of the future, which starts from social cohesion and evolves into everyday reality, through an independent changing process. A journey dedicated, above all, to those who are willing to learn and tell a piece of history of Italy experimenting fair society and economy other than a conformed way of thinking and rhetoric. The journey begins in Lamezia Terme, crosses the plain of Gioia Tauro, and ends in the Locride to see, hear and experience the tangible signs of a silent and slow revolution, which intends to renew the South of Italy, and challenges not only the Mafia’s power but also resignation and wait-and-see attitude. The story of a new approach to the “problem of the South”, which is not episodic or exceptional and not yet told in its entirety.
The event is promoted by Fondazione CON IL SUD on the occasion of its twelfth anniversary and mainly gives prominence to its commitment to changing the present, as resulting from the several (over a thousand) experiences that have been supported by the Foundation over the years. Projects initiated by third sector organisations, foundations, through networking with other local public and private bodies capable of mobilising the consciences and energies of those who live in those territories. The focus is on the various local development processes, which rely on the lever of participation, in the light of community-building and solidarity, by means of brave actions to combat Mafia organisations and to realise fair economy, in order to foster integration of migrants and the struggle against youth social distress.
The event envisages a number of visits to places and contexts of relevance where meetings will also take place aiming at outside observers (national media and international press representatives) on Thursday, October 11th, and Friday, October 12th. Following, a public meeting in the Centro Padre Pino Puglisi, a confiscated building in Polistena, will be held on Saturday, October 13th. During the event, those who have played a leading and active role in this slow development process will tell their experiences and express their points of view: They are those who – from the outside – could see with their own eyes and hear from several experiences, through sharing and mutual encouragement towards greater awareness-raising and propagation of good practices among the public opinion.
