Agenda
The event is an occasion to discover or learn about particular experiences, organisations, women and men who are marking a turning point in the way development is approached in Calabria. They are guided by a clear vision of the future, which starts from social cohesion and evolves into everyday reality, through an independent changing process. A journey dedicated, above all, to those who are willing to learn and tell a piece of history of Italy experimenting fair society and economy other than a conformed way of thinking and rhetoric. The journey begins in Lamezia Terme, crosses the plain of Gioia Tauro, and ends in the Locride to see, hear and experience the tangible signs of a silent and slow revolution, which intends to renew the South of Italy, and challenges not only the Mafia’s power but also resignation and wait-and-see attitude. The story of a new approach to the “problem of the South”, which is not episodic or exceptional and not yet told in its entirety.
A public meeting in the Centro Padre Pino Puglisi, a confiscated building in Polistena, will be held on Saturday, October 13th.
The event envisages a number of visits to places and contexts of relevance where meetings will also take place aiming at outside observers (national media and international press representatives) on Thursday, October 11th, and Friday, October 12th. Journalists who are interested can sign up by sending an e-mail to comunicazione@fondazioneconilsud.it

THRUSDAY, OCTOBER 11TH | 16:00 pm
Visit to the “Comunità Progetto Sud” LAMEZIA TERME
Lamezia Terme is a town heavily marked by the presence of the ‘Ndrangheta. For a number of years, the Comunità Progetto Sud led by Don Giacomo Panizza has been engaged in fostering pathways of legality and social inclusion addressing people with a disability, Roma and the youth, in particular through leisure activities, vocational training and work integration.
SOCIAL DINNER IN LAMEZIA TERME
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12TH
10:00 am – Siderno
Visit and meeting with the “Goel Group”
The Locride area is one of the most difficult territories in Calabria where the unemployment rate hits 75%. In 2003, the Goel cooperative group, whose chair is Vincenzo Linarello, started strongly opposing the Mafia’s power by creating the breeding ground of an economy capable of competing with underhand dealings.
SOCIAL LUNCH IN ROCCELLA IONICA
16:00 pm – Rosarno
Visit to a citrus orchard in a confiscated land
Rosarno is one of the towns where the ’Ndrangheta has always exercised heavy influence. In 2010, the town was at the centre of an uprising involving migrant workers, as well as the scene of violent clashes on grounds of racial origin, with dozens of injured people. Consorzio Macramè initiated the project “Mestieri legali” (Legal trades) here, in order to provide migrants with a decent job and to improve agricultural use of confiscated land. Moreover, other organisations delivering legal and medical assistance to migrants make their – necessary – presence strongly felt.
21:00 pm – Polistena
Social dinner at the “Centro Polifunzionale Padre Pino Puglisi”
